Telecommunications Milestones (1982 - 2007)
1982
Incorporation of PNCC with less than
200 customers (transferred from the U.N. Trust Territory Administration).
Telephone service was available only in Koror and Airai.
To place overseas calls, customers traveled to PNCC Operator Services in
Meyuns.
1990
Island
Cable Television Company (ICTV) was founded as a 50% joint venture between PNCC
and United Micronesia Development Association (UMDA).
1993
PNCC’s
corporate mission statement was developed:

communications corporation of the Republic, our mission is to anticipate, understand
and meet Palau’s telecommunications needs through leadership in quality, value and
technology for the benefit of our Customers, our Employees, and our Nation. We are
committed to providing universal service, recognizing our responsibility to integrate
Palau into the global telecommunications network for the long-term economic well
being of the people and Republic of Palau.
1994
An upgrade
of the international
transmission system was completed.
The earth station was completely refurbished and upgraded to a digital Standard-B
station.
PNCC
was granted a $39.1 million long-term loan from the United States Rural Utilities
Service to completely rebuild and modernize the national telecommunications infrastructure. The project, which aimed to expand telephone
services throughout Palau (providing “universal service”), was called “LightNet
2000.”
PNCC
introduced IDDD (International Direct Distance Dialing) service.
1995
PNCC
was one of the first countries in the Pacific region to introduce prepaid long distance
phone cards (“Debusch” cards), enabling customers to place overseas calls from any
phone.
