PNCC and PLDT Discuss Areas of Cooperation
March 12, 2008
Senior management of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) and the
PNCC Board of Directors and management met recently in Manila to explore possible
areas for short-term and long-term cooperation.
Founded in 1982, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is the leading
telecommunications provider in the Philippines. Through its three principal business
groups-fixed line, wireless, and information and communication technology - PLDT
offers the largest
and most diversified range of telecommunications
services across the Philippines' most extensive fiber optic backbone and fixed line,
cellular and satellite networks.
The purpose of the meeting was to revive and further strengthen the long-standing
relationship between PNCC and PLDT and to explore opportunities in the areas of
direct international traffic exchange, roaming services, wireless, Internet, fiber
connectivity and others that would foster economic growth and enable more efficient
trade between the two companies, as well as the two nations.
The major long-term objective discussed was the possibility of a submarine fiber-optic
cable link from the Philippines to Palau, and elsewhere.
The PNCC representative also met with the National Telecommunications Commission
of the Philippines together with Palau's Ambassador to the Philippines Ramon Rechebei.
The Commission is the regulating body of all telecommunications in the Philippines.
The meeting provided the PNCC delegation with a full overview of the development
of fiber-optic cable links into and out of the Philippines.
